Common Questions

Questions About Our Investment Approach

What’s the difference between investments and portfolio management at Tidewater?

Investments refers to the vehicles and philosophy behind what we buy — funds, ETFs, individual securities, or alternatives. Portfolio management is the ongoing process of managing, rebalancing, and adjusting those investments over time. The two work together as one service.

Do you recommend individual stocks or funds?

Most client portfolios are primarily built from low-cost mutual funds and ETFs for diversification and tax efficiency, with individual securities used selectively — for example, for concentrated positions or specific tax situations.

Are index funds or actively managed funds better for retirement?

Both have a place. Index funds typically offer lower costs and tax efficiency; actively managed funds can make sense in certain asset classes or for specific tax or income goals. We choose based on your plan, not a blanket preference for one over the other.

How are my investment choices reviewed over time?

We review fund performance, cost, and continued fit with your goals on an ongoing basis, and make changes when a holding no longer serves your plan — not on a fixed trading schedule.
