Giving Vehicles

Three Ways to Give Tax-Efficiently

DAF

Donor-Advised Fund — contribute now, deduct now, and grant to charities over time.

QCD

Qualified Charitable Distribution — give directly from your IRA; satisfies your RMD without raising your AGI.

CRT

Charitable Remainder Trust — income to you for life or a term, with the remainder passing to charity.

Common Questions

Questions About Charitable Giving

What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution and how much can I give?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution lets you transfer funds directly from your IRA to a qualified charity, satisfying some or all of your Required Minimum Distribution without adding the amount to your taxable income. Annual QCD limits are set by the IRS and adjust periodically — we’ll confirm the current-year limit as part of your plan.

Is a donor-advised fund or a QCD better for reducing my taxes?

It depends on your age and account type. A QCD (available once you’re 70½, from an IRA) directly satisfies your RMD without raising your adjusted gross income — often the more powerful tool after that age. A DAF is available at any age from a brokerage account and creates an upfront deduction. Many clients use both.

Can I give appreciated stock instead of cash?

Yes — donating securities you’ve held for more than a year lets you avoid the capital gains tax you’d owe if you sold them, while still claiming a deduction for the full fair market value. It’s often the most tax-efficient way to give.

Do I need to be wealthy to work with a charitable giving advisor?

No. Tax-efficient giving strategies like QCDs and appreciated-stock gifts are useful for most retirees making regular charitable contributions — not just those setting up a private foundation.
